Guest registration for hostels in Spain: Mossos d'Esquadra and SES.Hospedajes

Every accommodation must report its guests' details to the police. Who to and how depends on where the hostel is. Here is the difference, and how HostelOp handles it without retyping anything.

How HostelOp handles it

1. Check-in from their phoneThe guest gets a link and fills in every traveller's details before arriving, in Catalan, Spanish or English.
2. Only what appliesThe form asks for what the hostel's authority requires, and the municipality code is worked out from the postcode and town.
3. File or submissionIn Catalonia, one click gives you the Mossos file. Elsewhere, the SES.Hospedajes submission can go out on its own on arrival day.
4. Result in viewEach booking shows whether the report went through or needs a correction.

Frequently asked questions

Does a hostel in Catalonia also have to report to SES.Hospedajes?

No. In Catalonia establishments report guests only to the Mossos d'Esquadra, and the Catalan government passes the data on to the State. The Spanish National Police clarified this in a note dated 7 August 2024.

How is the data sent to the Mossos?

The Mossos have no automatic connection (web service). The hostel downloads a file in the official format and uploads it to the guest registration portal, under bulk file upload. HostelOp generates that file from each check-in.

And outside Catalonia?

Guests are reported to the Interior Ministry through SES.Hospedajes. HostelOp sends the data by web service and checks the result of every submission, because an accepted submission doesn't mean the data was valid.

What data do you need from guests?

Identity, ID document, nationality, date of birth, address and contact details, and the relationship for minors, among others. HostelOp's check-in form asks for them in the guest's language, and only what applies to where the hostel is.
